The Department of Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering (DICEA) was established on July 1, 2010, continuing the academic tradition of the former Department of Architecture and Urban Planning for Engineering and the Department of Hydraulics, Transport, and Roads, which were merged to form DICEA.
Thanks to the synergistic integration of scientific-disciplinary sectors in civil, building, and environmental engineering, DICEA now ranks among the leading institutions in both basic and applied research at national and international levels.
DICEA brings together faculty members and researchers from 19 scientific-disciplinary sectors, including: Hydraulics, Hydrology and Hydraulic and Maritime Structures, Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, Roads, Railways and Airports, Transportation, Real Estate Appraisal and Project Evaluation, Geomatics, Geotechnical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Production and Management of Built Environment, Architectural and Urban Design, Drawing, History of Architecture, Architectural Conservation, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban and Landscape Planning, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Hygiene and Public Health.
These experts engage in theoretical and applied research, teaching, and third-mission activities, focusing on topics relevant to the national agenda, such as environmental and energy transitions, urban regeneration, sustainable mobility and construction, adaptation to climate change (social, urban, infrastructural, and environmental), circularity and sustainability of processes.
The department’s interdisciplinary strengths enable the development of theoretical models, applied experiments, and field research in collaboration with national and international public institutions, businesses, and service companies. Over time, these competencies have fostered a close relationship with local communities, particularly in Rome, Latina and Rieti, where Sapienza has decentralized campuses with active DICEA faculty members.
Furthermore, the Department contributes to the advancement of knowledge by participating in inter-university cooperation projects, scientific networks, and international research initiatives, collaborating with various interdepartmental and interuniversity research centers.
